Pregnancy and your Teeth

Though most women believe that the only weird side effects to pregnancy are swollen feet and some freaky food combinations, believe it or not, your pregnancy can take tolls on your teeth and gums. There are a few ways this will occur; first, and most common, is pregnancy gingivitis. As early as the second month into your pregnancy, red, swollen, and even bleeding gums have been seen, and this is referred to as pregnancy gingivitis. Though the symptoms are basically the same as “regular” gingivitis, the causes may be different; i.e. a change in hormones. The gingivitis can be controlled through professional cleanings and tend to go away once the pregnancy is over. Another, and far less common, effect is a pregnancy granuloma, which is a growth that appears on the gums of a very small percentage of pregnant women, between 2% and 10%. Though another name for these are pregnancy tumors they are, in fact, not a tumor and are not cancerous, they are simply uncomfortable. Though you can get it removed if the growth causes speaking and eating to be a hassle, it will usually come back after being removed, but after pregnancy, the growth will disappear. Morning sickness can cause tooth erosion; if you suffer from excessive morning sickness, contact your local dentist to learn about prevention.

Though going to the dentist while pregnant is safe, the second trimester is the best time to get any routine dental care; be sure to avoid the first trimester and the last half of the third trimester, as these are crucial times of growth and development in your baby’s time in the womb. If you need x-rays, your dentist should know if you are pregnant and will then take extra steps to be sure your baby is safe from the radiation. In the case of emergency dental care, in which the need of medicines or anesthesia will be needed, consult your obstetrician or midwife.

A child’s first visit to the dentist is best at a young age to have their tooth development checked, learn proper brushing and to introduce them having their teeth cleaned professionally in order to ensure their comfort level for years to come.

To help your children protect their teeth and gums and greatly reduce their risk of getting cavities, teach them to follow these simple steps:

* Brush twice a day with ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque the sticky film on teeth that’s the main cause of tooth decay.

* Floss daily to remove plaque from between your teeth and under the gum line, before it can harden into tartar. Once tartar has formed, it can only be removed by a professional cleaning.

* Eat a well-balanced diet that limits starchy or sugary foods, which produce plaque acids that cause tooth decay. When you do eat these foods, try to eat them with your meal instead of as a snack the extra saliva produced during a meal helps rinse food from the mouth.

* Make sure that your children’s drinking water is fluoridated. If your water supply; municipal, well or bottled does not contain fluoride, your dentist or pediatrician may prescribe daily fluoride supplements.
